What percentage of something account for 80% of something else? | Tableau Tutorial

Published 5 months ago • 1 min read

Hello,

I hope this message finds you well. Thank you for your support these past few years. It's been great receiving your kind words of support and encouragement.

I've been recently asked to get the percentage of something that accounts for something else ... like is it true that 80% of sales come from 20% of customers? While working through this, I realized I didn't have the steps documented yet in any of my YouTube tutorials. So this is for you - if ever you need to answer this same question in the future. Please note, however, that what I present is just one approach. I am certain you will find different variations of this approach that will get the same result.

Whether you’re aiming to analyze 8% or 80% of your data, this tutorial can help. This tutorial not only teaches you the technical steps but also helps clarify the logic behind each step, ensuring a deeper understanding of data analysis in Tableau and any potential pitfalls.

This technique will work with any data set, so you don’t have to be using sales data. You could be looking at number of complaints, number of patients, fundraising dollars, etc.
