Hello Reader,

Hope you are having a wonderful day. Here are the data tidbits for this week.

Tableau Tip - Pasting Parameter Values

Did you know that if you have a string parameter that accepts a list, you can copy values into your parameter? That’s right, you don’t have to type the values in one by one.

You can copy the values:

  • from an existing field’s values
  • from clipboard
    • You can copy and paste from a text editor or spreadsheet
      • Copy = Ctrl + C in PC, or Cmd + C in Mac
      • Paste = Ctrl + V in PC, or Cmd + V in Mac

If you accidentally copy and paste multiple times, Tableau has some stopgap to within the Parameter window to tell you that there are duplicate values:

CRAP Principles of Design

We can follow some simple guidelines when designing charts, reports, dashboards, or even presentations.

The CRAP Principles of Design was introduced in Robin Williams’ book called “The Non-Designer’s Design Book”.

In her formative work, Williams argues that anyone can create well-designed work by applying four basic principles:

Contrast - Make critical data pop

  • To highlight essential data, it's crucial to differentiate them significantly from the rest of your design, be it through font, color, or background choices. This differentiation ensures that vital information catches the eye instantly.
  • Without Contrast: Without adequate contrast, there's a real risk that your most important messages will fade into the background, overlooked by your audience.

Repetition - Create familiar, consistent experience

  • By maintaining consistent design elements across your work, you create a sense of familiarity and cohesion, making it easier for users to navigate and understand the content.
  • Without Repetition: Inconsistent design elements, such as varying the placement of filters or controls, can confuse users, detracting from the user experience

Alignment - Avoid sloppy presentation

  • Alignment means to arrange in a straight line, meaning objects line up and are arranged in an organized manner
  • Without Alignment: Disorganized, poorly aligned elements not only look unprofessional but also compromise the perceived reliability and credibility of the data presented

Proximity - Indicate relationships through closeness

  • Placing related metrics and objects close together intuitively communicates their connection.
  • Without Proximity: Without thoughtful proximity, you risk implying false relationships, potentially confusing and misleading your viewers.

Here is a quick reference to the CRAP principles from Paper Leaf.

That's it for this week!

Hope there were tidbits that you found helpful.

As always, remember your journey is unique. Your combination of past, present, and future knowledge and experiences makes you unique. Your learning journey will have highs and lows - but keep going. Celebrate the wins no matter how small.

Until next time,

Donabel
