How to deal with missing data points - Learn data with sqlbelle - 2024.03.23 edition

Published about 2 months ago • 1 min read

Hello Reader,

Here are this week's tidbits.

Tableau Tip

If you have a line chart with missing points, you can choose to display it in different ways.

When you right-click on your measure axis (for example, Sales) and choose Format, you can see the options for Special Values.

There are 4 options:

  • Show at Indicator
  • Show at Default Value
  • Hide (Connect Lines)
  • Hide (Break Lines)

Just be careful with your choice, as the resulting chart could be misleading.

Connecting lines - whether at default value (B), or simply bypassing them (C) - will give the impression that data exists when it doesn't.

Tableau provides us with many options, but it’s still up to us to make the choice.

Just because we can does not mean we should.

Data Viz Tip

While we are on the topic of line charts, when do/should we use them?

Line charts are your best bet when you want to visualize trends over time or show related sequences of events.

We should NOT use line charts for unrelated data points.

  • This is misleading
  • This suggests continuity and relationship where there is none

Don't let your charts mislead your audience.

Book Inspiration

Do you have projects you’ve been meaning to work on, but delayed and put in your “someday” list?

I have a lot of them.

@drnicthomas recommended this book to me called “Start Finishing”.

I am just a chapter in, and I think I got the boost of motivation I need to “stop thinking” about them and “start doing” them.

Do you recommend any books for those who need a boost of inspiration?

It's a wrap.

That's it for now.

Remember, your journey in data is unique. Let's learn together.

Until next time,

Donabel
