Data Viz is not Data Storytelling - Learn data with sqlbelle 2024.04.13 edition

Hello Reader,

Here are the data tidbits for this week.

Tableau Tip - Calculated Field Editor

Did you know that the Tableau Calculated field editor is modeless?

A modal dialog box is when you cannot interact with other areas until you close the open window or dialog box.

A modeless (or non-modal) window is when you can interact with other areas WITHOUT having to close the open window.

Tableau’s calculated field editor

  • can remain open while you make edits. Click on “Apply” to see the change
  • allows you to drag and drop fields or parameters from your canvas to the editor. This is handy especially when working with Quick Table Calculations, where the formula is embedded in the pill

Data Visualization is NOT Data Storytelling

Data visualization is not data analysis. Data visualization is not data storytelling.

We often mistakenly believe that our message is automatically understood once we’ve created a visual representation.

Data visualization, however, can serve as a bridge between raw analysis and storytelling. It can enhance the understanding and engage the audience, but it should not distract nor detract from the core message.

Similar to old-fashioned stories we remember as kids, stories don’t have to have pictures. They can just be printed words.

Or it doesn’t even have to have printed words - it could be just spoken words. These stories could still be impactful and memorable even with just spoken words.

In data storytelling, recognizing our audience is key. Tailoring our language, delivery, and terminology based on our audience’s unique needs is fundamental for effective communication.

Here’s some food for thought.

How would you adjust your analysis/presentation to these different groups of audiences?

  • key senior leaders in your organization
  • your direct supervisor
  • media for public consumption
  • data professionals in a data conference interested in learning about your work and your industry
  • students in a high school, where you’re invited as a speaker, to share what it’s like to work in your respective field

That's it for this week!

Remember, your journey in data is unique. Don’t compare yourself to others.

Embrace learning, be open to opportunities, and never stop exploring the possibilities within data.

Until next time,

Donabel
